National Holocaust Memorial Education Centre
In coming years Canberra’s educational tourism landscape will welcome a new institution dedicated to fostering citizens invested in our democracy and preventing children from falling victim to the promotion of discrimination and division.
The National Holocaust Memorial Education Centre (NHMEC) will examine lessons of the Holocaust in a safe way relevant to contemporary challenges.
Utilising creative technology, techniques and expertise the NHMEC will promote the positive character traits and values we would hope all Australian children have the opportunity to develop.
The Prime Minister has highlighted the contribution the NHMEC will make to Australia, and the Australian Government fully support its goals.
Complementing Australian Curriculum objectives relating to civics and Australian history that are central to the Canberra experience, school groups visiting the NHMEC will learn about:
- Jewish culture and Australia’s Jewish community.
- First Nations leader William Cooper, who in 1938 led a world-first protest against Nazi persecution.
- Relevant aspects of Australia’s involvement in World War II.
- The importance of learning what it means to be a good citizen. New NHMEC facilities are being developed – meanwhile, the National Jewish Memorial Centre in the Parliamentary Triangle is already welcoming school groups.
