Little Darlings Youth Portrait Prize 2022
Calling all teachers! Tell your students to get their pencils sharpened, brushes loose and cameras ready, ‘cause there’s a new portrait prize in town! Little Darlings is only for students, with four separate categories across Kindergarten to Year 12. Responding to the theme ‘identity’, students can paint, draw, photograph, print or combine all of these to make their portrait. We’re just keen to see what they come up with. Winners will be chosen from each category by a panel of judges including our Director, Karen Quinlan AM.
Sound fun and exciting? How about this too?
• The twelve winning artworks will be framed by our Preparator and be on display in the Gallery alongside the Darling Portrait Prize in 2022.
• Our Imaging and Digitisation guru will photograph the works, which will be used to create a calendar designed by our Creative Manager.
• The calendars will be available online, in the Portrait Gallery store and in the mailboxes of the twelve winners!
You have a while to get sorted, as entries close 8 October 2021, but why not start early?

Teacher Professional Learning Webcast
Support the teaching of Civics and Citizenship by utilising the expertise of Canberra’s national cultural institutions
Education staff from our national cultural institutions will explore the range of teaching resources available and guide teachers on how to analyse primary sources and interpret historical objects, documents and stories.
Presentations will be delivered over four weeks—5 May, 12 May, 19 May and 26 May 2021

Plan your school trip to Canberra with the new PACER increase for 2021
The Parliament And Civics Education Rebate (PACER) Program provides a travel subsidy for Year 4–12 students across Australia to visit Parliament House, Museum of Australian Democracy, National Electoral Education Centre, the Australian War Memorial and other national institutions as part of their Civics and Citizenship education.
Under PACER, students who learn about Civics and Citizenship in the classroom see their knowledge brought to life when they experience Canberra first hand. Students must visit three of the four mandatory institutions—Parliament House, the Museum of Australian Democracy, the National Electoral Education Centre or the Australian War Memorial.
They also have the opportunity to visit a number of other sites of cultural and historical interest while in Canberra.
While many schools were disappointed in having to postpone their planned trip to Canberra in 2020, there is now fantastic news for schools planning a visit to Canberra in 2021, with the Australian Government increasing the rebate amount. Depending on your school’s distance from Canberra, the rebate amount is between $30 and $510 per student.
The increased rebate amounts will apply for schools that travel during 2021 so we encourage you to make the most of this and plan your school trip early to avoid disappointment.

While visiting the National Capital Exhibition at Regatta Point, pop into the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre. Your students can explore the city’s attractions using our interactive digital displays and pick up some local and regional merchandise as a souvenir of their trip to the nation’s capital. Whether it be dinosaurs, snow globes, beanies or just a snack for the way home, we’ve got you covered.
Our friendly staff and volunteers are on hand to assist with advice and local tips on what to see, do and where to eat on your school’s visit to Canberra.
