Questacon

Questacon is Australia’s leading science centre, offering a range of engaging and exciting experiences for students of all ages, inspiring interest and fostering positive associations with STEM education

Questacon has two facilities in Canberra—the iconic National Science and Technology Centre in the Parliamentary Zone, and The Ian Potter Foundation Technology Learning Centre in Deakin— offering experiences founded on Questacon’s philosophy of hands-on learning.

Self-guided gallery experience

Questacon’s Centre in the Parliamentary Zone offers more than 200 hands-on experiences in eight themed galleries. Perfect for self-guided exploration, the galleries encourage interaction and inspire questions as students explore the science behind our world and discover the smarter way to have fun.

In the Excite@Q exhibition, students can battle a robot in a game of air hockey or free fall down a six-metre slide. The Awesome Earth exhibition highlights the mighty power and stunning beauty of our planet and the universe in which we live, while Q Lab offers a dynamic experimental environment that inspires students to ask questions and discover answers with their classmates.

To complement the interactive exhibition experiences, the Questacon Excited Particles perform daily Spectacular Science Shows on a wide range of topics linked to the Australian Curriculum. A full list of the shows and linked curriculum codes are available on our website.

Workshops at Ian Potter Foundation Technology Learning Centre

The Questacon Maker Project offers free handson, technology, innovation and design workshops
developed specifically for students in years 6–12. Questacon Maker Project workshops are delivered in our very own Maker Space at The Ian Potter Foundation Technology Learning Centre in Deakin, where creative ideas and real time innovation come to life.

These learner-centred workshops foster creative thinking and support Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education with links to the Australian Curriculum. Students use everyday materials and simple tools to make, try and refine prototypes and innovate solutions to STEM problems.

Our fully facilitated workshops cover a range of topics. Students can hack robots to do their chores, try their hand at designing a rifling rocket and discover how Australian innovators are making waves in sustainable energy production.

Workshops are offered Monday to Friday as morning or afternoon sessions for groups of 20–72 students depending on the workshop. Bookings are essential.

Evening Experiences

The Q by Night program offers groups an exclusive guided experience through Questacon’s Centre in the Parliamentary Zone for two hours between 5–9 pm. A visit to the Questacon Shop is included
as part of the Q by Night experience. Admission fees apply and bookings are essential due to the
popularity of the program.
