Program overview

On this 3-day immersion experience join education staff, historians and curators of Canberra’s premier history institutions as they share with you Australian stories that live within our collections.


Focussing on themes and topics from Australian History curriculum, your hosts will assist you in identifying vast resources available to use in your classroom and how to efficiently access them.

Enjoy a Canberra Summer whilst networking with Teachers from around Australia.

• Enjoy a Welcome Dinner on Sunday night at the historic Mercure Hotel in Ainslie, just 5 minutes’ walk from the popular restaurant districts of Braddon and Canberra City.

• Start Monday exploring the powerful political history of our nation at the Museum of Australian Democracy; dive into top secret documents that bring our history alive at the National Archives of Australia; and finish the day relaxing at the National Film and Sound Archive, reliving our social history captured on film.

• Begin Tuesday immersed in the National Library of Australia’s rich and diverse collection, learning how to access collection online to enhance your students’ experience in the classroom; delve into Australia’s wartime history with historians and educators; and complete the day by commemorating servicemen and women by laying a wreath at the Australian War Memorial’s Last Post Ceremony.

• On Wednesday take a walk through our social history at the National Museum of Australia, while exploring its galleries and special exhibitions and hearing from experts how students are engaged in their exciting school program offering onsite and online.

A. You sure can, and we will provide you with a receipt to make that easier for you.

Q. Does the cost include my travel to Canberra?

A. No, but accommodation and breakfast, airport transfers, coach travel between venues, a welcome dinner, 2 lunches plus all attraction entry fees are covered by the $850 program charge.

Q. Do I need to be teaching to attend?

A. No, that’s not a requirement to register. This program is also relevant for preservice teachers and will set you up for success in your first school placement.
